A new site, MathsFlash by a London Maths teacher offers a collection of activities linking Maths to current issues and real world problems. Categories include News, Sport and Entertainment. These short activities would make excellent starters. Answers are provided.

I was reminded once again of the value of joining Diigo groups this morning when an email led to the following site shared by Martin Burrett.

Sitalakshmi Seshadrinathan’s Gymnasium for Brain has an extensive collection of puzzles with clear solutions. She also has a section on speed maths (Vedic). This has been added to the Games page.

InterActMath

Added to the Collections page, InterActMath is designed to accompany Addison-Wesley and Prentice Hall textbooks but does stand alone. Choose a book and a chapter for several exercises, the view can be enlarged so could be displayed on an interactive whiteboard. The questions are multiple choice. It is possible to view examples with complete explanations. A keypad is provided for entering mathematical expressions.

Mathematics Challenges

See the Challenges page. The UK Maths Challenge resources for example offer numerous excellent questions, the three challenges, Junior, Intermediate and Senior are aimed at students from 11 to 18.

A small number of questions can make an ideal starter. No calculators are allowed or measuring instruments – just rough paper!
